Portrait of Shakespeare Unveiled, 399 Years Late

On Monday in London, Stanley Wells, the chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, unveiled what he claims is the only picture of William Shakespeare painted during the playwright’s lifetime

The trust explains the significance in a statement on its Web site:

Up to now only two images have been accepted as authentic representations of what Shakespeare may have looked like. One is the engraving by Martin Droeshout published in the First Folio of 1623. The other is the portrait bust in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon; the monument is mentioned in the Folio and therefore must have been in place by 1623. Both are posthumous –- Shakespeare died in 1616. The engraver, who was only in his teens when Shakespeare died, must have had a picture, until now unidentified, to work from. Professor Wells believes it to be the one he has revealed today and that it was done from life, in about 1610, when he was 46 years old.

Big Blue Horse? Many in Denver Say Neigh

DENVER — Airports can be tense and testy places in the best of times. At Denver International Airport, you can add glow-in-the-dark eyes to the list of triggers for a traveler’s angst.

A statue of a giant male horse — electric-eyed, cobalt blue and anatomically correct — was installed in February 2008 on the roadway approach to the terminal, and it is freaking more than a few people out.

Haters of this work say that “Blue Mustang,” as it is formally known, by the artist Luis Jiménez (killed in 2006 when a section of the 9,000-pound fiberglass statue fell on him during construction), is frightening, or cursed by its role in Mr. Jiménez’s death, or both. Supporters say the 32-foot-tall horse is a triumph, if only as a declaration of Denver’s courage to go beyond easy-listening-style airport art that many cities use like visual Dramamine to soothe travelers’ nerves.

Love it or loathe it, though, “Blue Mustang” is doing what art is supposed to do — get attention. There’s even a poetry slam planned in Denver to read horse haikus, of which about 250 have been composed, believe it or not.

“It’s definitely achieved its purpose of being memorable,” said Rachel Hultin, a real-estate broker in Denver who started a page on Facebook last month to vent her horse anxieties, byebyebluemustang.com, and found herself at the center of the debate.

UMmmm... a Big Blue Horse...it may not be what you want to see while landing after a long flight.. but GET OVER IT. People should appreciate art more. The great thing about all the controversy is that Jiménez's work is getting more attention.

Bresson was painter before he became a photographer, so his composition is outstanding. He was all about catching the moment.

Diane Arbus

Arbus took pictures of people the way there were, she didn't try to change them for her photos. It didn't matter if they were weird, ugly, sad, ect.... She boldly took pictures of who they were..

Jenn Hoffman

Jenn Hoffman is a photographer based out of L.A. she does mainly fashion photography...
She is young, but I think she has some great work..

Colville is a Canadian painter. Some of his paintings that I liked best of his catches people unaware that they are the subject, and in the act of something.

she is know mostly for her photos of her family, especially her kids.

Van Gogh
Van Gogh is one of my all time favorite painters. It might be more difficult to emulate his work in photos though...
